Dragon Ball Evolution yet to Evolve

review No Comments

What?: Based on an old Japanese folk tale, the movie is the story of Goku (Justin Chatwin) who stays with his grandfather who gifts him a dragon ball on his 18th birthday.

Now he’s set on a mission to find the other balls(lol, that sounded funny) and along the way also defeat the evil Piccolo (James Marsters) who wants to rule over the world with his bad powers. Master Roshi (Chow Yun-Fat) who guides Goku, plays an important part along with Bulma (Emmy Rossum) in accomplishing the mission.

Focus?: There is zero scope for anything worth calling entertainment in this to-be Razzie nominated film.
What’s not: It’s hard to believe that such mediocre special effects were served in a year when SFX impressed and wowed us all the way.

There’s too much talk and monologue in a film that promises action. Even when the punches and blows start coming in, you can tell that they’ve been choreographed badly. The cast sleepwalks their way halfway through the film. As the climax draws close you realise there are many unanswered questions the plot leaves exposed.

Advisory: Give it a sure shot miss, catch the animated version instead. It has more life and colour to it.

Fast and the Furious 4

So what do you expect when you have awesome muscle cars, driven by men with plenty of attitude? An action-packed entertainer that sends your senses racing and well they have done it thrice, but still they give it to you the 4th time.

This sequel of the wide spoken Fast and Furious series brings back the old team, real men driving some real cool cars and effortlessly carrying off few cool stunts, which i always wanted to do, but did not, just because I do not own such beasts.

fast-and-the-furious

Dom Toretto (Diesel) and Brian O’Conner (Walker) join hands to fight a common enemy a Mexican druglord Braga (John Ortiz).
Of course, it isn’t as simple as it sounds, as both Dom and Brian have huge trust issues. After the past betrayals and fallouts, it takes more than just one murder for them to reunite.

What’s Fast: The beasts are hotter, sexier and faster than the first three chapters (really cool).

Diesel and Walker reunion reprise memories and set up scenario to weave an interesting and better plot.

The action scenes are really packed and the background score adds up the fuel to the chase sequences.

What’s not: Throwing logic and reason out of the window, the director steers clear of any attempt to bring clarity to the plot (but I guess thats how it works).

Scenes where the cars chase one another in a tunnel remind one of Grand Theft Auto rather than something you would see on the big screen.

Some scenes use CGI and effects to give a feeling of reality, but fall flat.

There isn’t any scope on the acting front with both Walker and Diesel walk ing around like robots showing off their brawny bodies substituting them for emotions.

What to do: With enough style to dazzle a ramp walk, the film lacks in substance. If you are fan of the series, you’ll watch it nevertheless. We only wish there was more fire to the fuel of this machine.

The final verdict: I’ll give a ***1/2 on *****

Seven Pounds – A Review

review No Comments

A bit late to review on the film but I wanted to anyway, so here goes,

movie : Seven Pounds (English)

Director: Gabriele Muccino
Cast: Will Smith, Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson

Verdict: ***1/2 on *****
Director Gabriele Muccino and actor Will Smith, who gave us the brilliant film, The Pursuit of Happyness, work their spell on us once more. The theme—organ donation—is handled with deftness ensuring that you keep thinking (and weeping) about the film long after it’s over.

The pace may not be typical Muccino but the classy camera work keeps you riveted. Seven Pounds rides entirely on Will’s shoulders. Perhaps, it’s a little too early in his career for him to have attempted a role of such gravitas, but we admire him for the effort and the courage. Our only quibble is with the background score. It’s jarring.

Lessons from the film:
— Don’t use mobile phone while driving.
— Donate your organs to give life to others.
— Find happiness in making others smile.

Lesson best not learnt:
— Suicide solves problems.
— Box jellyfish (chironex fleckeri) are fascinating creatures to know.
— They can Kill you!

What bothers me is Will Smith’s hair cut, I wonder why his hair go from long to short and back, between scenes? download reign of terror aka black book the
